Best Cayman Island Adventures

February 12, 2019

There is so much to enjoy on the beautiful Grand Cayman Island.  When planning a trip there, it can be overwhelming.

Here is my list of top activities you should check out while visiting the Cayman Islands.

1.  Seven Mile Beach.

Luckily our hotel The Westin Grand Cayman was situated right on the strip of beach called Seven Mile Beach. This beach is on the western side of the island and offers serene waters for swimming, snorkeling and playing.  Those picturesque views of super blue clear water are not photo shopped.  The reason they are so clear is that the reef surrounding this portion of the island is a few miles out and the waves break there and simply roll in gently to shore, creating a calm clear effect on this beach.  It spans seven miles (hence the name) and has dozens of hotels sprinkled upon it.  If you cannot stay at a hotel right on the beach, that is ok.  Many places will allow visitors from outside on their white sandy beaches.  Inquire with the hotel prior to finding a spot on the beach.  These white beaches and clear aqua waters are not to be missed.

2.  Catamaran Sailing with Red Sail Sports.

This was one of my very favorite activities we had the opportunity to do while on Cayman.  Red Sail Sports has several departing offices around the island, one of them being right out of The Westin Grand Cayman.  This was convenient for us, but remember there are other spots they operate out of.  They have a wonderful reputation for professionalism and cleanliness of their boats.  We were so pleased with our sailing day which went across the bay to Rum Point.

3.  Rum Point.

This is a bit of a tourist trap, but it is super fun.  On Rum Point, there is a bar, a bbq spot, volleyball courts, tons of water sports and beaches to relax upon.  You can spend an entire day here splashing in the water and enjoying the famous Mudslide that was created right here on Rum Point.  It is said that the best Mudslides in the world come from this spot!

4.  Stingray City.

{photo taken with a waterproof camera, sorry for poor quality!}
Stingray City is one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Out a few miles from the coast of Cayman is a large sandbar.  It is said that the fishermen used to stop on the sandbar to clean the fish before bringing them into land on the island.  For this reason the stingrays began conveneing on the sandbar as they learned they would get fed.  Tourists started going there to feed and interact with the stingrays years ago and they keep coming back.  Here you can snorkel with them, touch them even kiss them!  It was a highlight of our week in Cayman!

5. Crystal Caves.

This tour takes you down into the caves where stalagtites and stalagmites have grown over thousands of years.  There are beautifully lit pools of water and bats that fly in and out of the caves while you explore.  Here you will see a beautiful part of the middle of the island and enjoy a lovely walk through the jungle.

6.  Snorkeling.

Out on the reef is a very cool place to snorkel.  Around the reef you can find all sorts of varieties of fish, conch and lobster.  We saw some very colorful species and had so much fun exploring the reef.

7. Cayman Turtle Center.

On the south side of the island is a turtle farm where you can actually swim and snorkel with the turtles.  This is a bit of a tourist trap but it is pretty cool.  I feel like swimming with sea turtles definetly makes the list.

8.  Rum Tasting.

One of the islands major exports is rum.  There are several spots on the island to indulge in some rum tasting.  Our favorite spot was  Cayman Spirits Co. where we tried several options of the local fare.  Beware, you will need a driver afterwards!

9.  Grand Ol House.

This is a restaurant found in  Georgetown .  The food is delicious local fare, with delicious drinks and the view cannot be beat!  Try to get a reservation at sunset and you will not be sorry.  The sunsets on Cayman are stunning!

10.  Shopping in town.

If you are looking for souvenirs head to  Georgetown for a little shopping. You can find all sorts of shopping here from trinkets to expensive jewelry.  Stop in town for some lunch and watch the cruise ships head in.  Many cruise ships pull into this port for the day including my personal fave Disney Cruise Line.

11.  Wave Runners on the Sea.

Found at Red Sail Sports on Seven Mile Beach, you can rent wave runners by the hour and zip up and down the coast.  The waves here are small so you can really open it up and fill your need for speed up and down the beach.

12.  Resort Hop.

All along seven mile beach are gorgeous resorts all with lovely beaches and fine dining.  We spent an afternoon bopping down the beach sampling cocktails at the various bars and stopping for lunch at a resort other than ours just for a bit of change of pace.

13.  Beach Adventuring.

There are tons of beautiful beaches on Cayman.  You can rent a jeep and hit the road to explore the many beach options.  Starfish point is a great option as is The Bluff.

14.  Find some history.

At Pedro St. James National Historic Site, you will learn the history of the island at its early settles.   The island has a fascinating history.  Here you will see the first house built on the island.  There are also amazing views from this point of the ocean. Perfect for photos and selfies!

15.  Relax and live on Cayman Time.

This is a saying on the island meaning we need to slow down and just go with the flow.  Laying on the beach with a cocktail in hand is absolutely one of the best ways to enjoy the island.

If you are lucky enough to go on a vacation to The Cayman Islands, you will have so much fun.  It is one of the most beautiful beach destinations I have ever visited.  Happy Travels.

XOXO, LEAH

  1. I wish I had read this before our last cruise! It would have been helpful to hit up a few of the key spots you included. I will be adding a few ideas to my bucket list now.
